Education plays a vital role in building the future of our nation by transforming lives and communities. We have several educator heroes who help students aim high and achieve their potential, often meeting and overcoming considerable challenges along the way. Recently Delhi based MT Research & Educational Services (MTRES) came up with Teaching Excellence Awards (TEA) 2018, to recognize the monumental role teachers play in our society as they instil a desire to learn and achieve and create tomorrow’s leaders. Meet one of the awardees, Dr. Ravi Kumar Gupta, Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering Department, School of Automobile, Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering, Manipal University, Jaipur, who has been honoured with Excellent Teacher Award in MTRES TEA 2018.

Dr Ravi’s schooling happened from Govt. Secondary School Karauli. He completed his Graduation (AMIE) in Mechanical Engineering in 2001 from The Institution of Engineers (India) while he was working in private small scale industries. He realized that his interests are in research so he appeared for GATE in 2003 and left his job to complete his Master (M.Tech.) in Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing from one of India’s premier engineering institute, Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology, Allahabad (MNNIT). During his M.Tech., he received a job offer in campus placements but at the same time he also received a call for Ph.D. admission from Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. IISc being the top research institution in India, he chose to pursue the field of his passion. It was a turning point in his life.
Doing AMIE after studying in a remotely located village in Rajasthan was extremely difficult. My uncle Dr. Pitam Chand Gupta helped me a lot in my academics.

Dr. Ravi’s focus of research as part of his Ph.D. was in the area of Feature-based Approach for Semantic Interoperability of Shape Models. He also got the opportunity to visit University of Bordeaux 1, France, as a Visiting Researcher in 2009. During his Ph.D., he received scholarships from MHRD, Govt. of India, and Indo-French Sandwich Ph.D. Scholarship from Embassy of France in India. He completed his Ph.D. in 2012 and was also honoured at IISc with MAA Communications Gold Medal for the Best Doctoral Thesis.

Education from govt. schools, completing graduation while working in private industries, getting full scholarship at MNNIT, gave me the confidence in myself.

Subsequently, he entered the teaching profession in year 2012 as Associate Professor at PES Institute of Technology (PESIT), Bangalore, and then joined National Institute of Technology, Silchar, as Assistant Professor. He was instrumental in developing the M.Tech. Course in CAD-CAM and Automation at the institute. He was interested in continuing his research and got the opportunity to go to France in 2014 to join a European Commission Project at École Centrale de Nantes (ECN) for three years to do his postdoc. He joined Manipal University, Jaipur, after returning from France in 2017.
I was involved in developing solutions and tools for product-service design and reconfiguration as per the requirements of industrial use cases of companies like Airbus, Arcelik, Comau and Gizelis Robotics in European Union H2020 Project “ProRegio”.
