Many reports have covered how improper dumping of waste and widespread use of plastic is spoiling the ecological balance, polluting our rivers, endangering lives of plants and animals and creating health hazards for us. Moreover, awareness and implementation of efficient waste management processes is still far from reality. This prompted Dhanashree Chauhan to develop a decentralised method of waste management and a viable solution in the form of Home Composting Kits called The Bug Factory. Founded in 2015, her venture ILOVECOMPOSTING (ILC) has taught composting practices to 7000+ students and over 300 families have already started home composting using their kits.
Born in Ahmednagar, Dhanashree did Fine Arts in Painting from Abhinav Kala Mahavidhalaya, Pune. She came up with the idea of her venture when she was doing her certified course in Gardening at Agarkar Research Institute, Pune. She designed her composting kit keeping in mind the urban scenarios, the space crunch, busy lifestyle and ease of use for children as well as senior citizens. ILC has developed a self sustaining method of composting where we can use the compost, that we have harvested from first batch of kitchen and garden waste, as bio culture to compost the further waste and thereby reduce the cost of managing waste.
Despite of her business and personal engagements, Dhanashree has always nurtured her hobby of teaching children both in her personal capacity as well as through initiatives like NiE of The Times of India. She introduces children to the concepts of segregation, composting, growing organic vegetable gardens and being kind and loving to animals. They learn the science of composting. Her demonstration sessions have encouraged many children to take up composting as a science project. Apart from schools, Dhanashree has also conducted numerous awareness sessions in various institutes, clubs and corporate offices. Due to her dedication, she has been blessed with the support of environment conscious people in various cities as her volunteers.
Over 300 families using The Bug Factory
Over 7000 students educated about science of composting
Children of waste management workers in unorganized sector are helping their parents to manage waste; these children are literally growing, sleeping and playing in waste. Also, waste pickers are treated very badly. It is very inhuman. There is huge disparity in our country. Segregating and composting at home will start breaking this chain where others are managing our waste. Dhanashree Chauhan
ILC is a registered vendor by Pune Municipal Corporation for providing home composting solution. Dhanashree and her team have participated in various exhibitions and fairs to sell their Bug Factory kits. They have also partnered with multiple stores in Pune to sell their kits. She believes that Composting is a new skill to learn giving people opportunity to earn by composting and selling compost. Dhanashree plans to take her product to other cities of India and International markets in the near future.
