Education plays a vital role in building the future of our nation by transforming lives and communities. We have several educator heroes who help students aim high and achieve their potential, often meeting and overcoming considerable challenges along the way. Recently Delhi based MT Research & Educational Services (MTRES) came up with the second edition of their Teaching Excellence Awards (TEA) 2019, to recognize the monumental role teachers play in our society to create tomorrow’s leaders as they instil a desire to learn and achieve. The awards celebrate the efforts of all those who go above and beyond to promote excellence within our education system. Meet Dr. Bidisha Chakraborty, Principal, Naaya Aayam Multi-disciplinary Institute (NAMI), Jorpati, Kathmandu, Nepal, who has been honoured with Excellent Teacher Award in MTRES TEA 2019.

Dr. Bidisha has made a mark in education field right from her college days. In-spite of facing challenges of chronic asthma early on during her student phase, she was State Topper in CCA course and was awarded the Best Student Award in 2005 from Government of Assam, Government of India. She completed her graduation in B.Sc. Physics in 2006 from Gauhati University. Her strong will power led her to achieve the remarkable feat of being a Gold Medallist in M.Sc. (Ecology and Environmental Science) from Assam University, in 2008. Since her interests were in education field, she also completed Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) in 2010.
She was awarded DST-INSPIRE Research Fellowship for pursuing Ph.D. in Environmental Monitoring & Management from the Department of Science & Technology, New Delhi, Government of India. She was actively engaged in the field of rainwater quality analysis with emphasis on heavy metal analysis and rainwater harvesting technology during her Ph.D. tenure. She completed her Ph.D. from Assam University in 2016.
Dr Bidisha has the distinction of educating students from different countries and ethnic backgrounds. She started her professional career as a Lecturer in Bongaigaon College, Assam, in 2009. Post her Ph.D., she joined Royal Thimphu College, affiliated to the Royal University of Bhutan, in 2016, where she got the opportunity to educate the students of Wheaton College, Massachusetts, USA and Seisa University, Japan, under students exchange program. Currenly, she is working as Principal at NAMI College, Kathmandu, Nepal, since July 2018.

Under her leadership and with support from the college management, NAMI is being developed as Nepal’s premium Educational Institution in partnership with the University of Northampton (UoN), United Kingdom. NAMI students also get registered as UoN students. UoN and NAMI faculty jointly deliver all curriculum as designed by UoN and approved by Government of Nepal. Upon graduation, NAMI students are awarded a University of Northampton degree as well.
I follow Dr. Walter Lewin’s method of eccentric teaching and students love and enjoy my teaching.

Dr Bidisha has a flair in teaching as well as administration. She is adept at identifying and adapting teaching resources in order to meet the varying needs of students with different learning abilities, learning agilities and special education needs. She believes in working closely with parents and community to maximize their involvement in college activities and to ensure the development of more resources for the college. She is committed in taking constructive and purposeful actions to produce optimistic, independent, compassionate, life-long learners and leaders who will bring glory to the Nation.
Her key focus areas of research include Waste Management, Water and Wastewater Treatment, Water Analysis, Environmental Management and Sustainable Development. She is credited with number of research articles published in peer-reviewed journals. She is a Member of reputed professional bodies like International Association of Engineers, International Society for Environmental Information Sciences (ISEIS), etc. She was felicitated with the Young Scientist Award 2016 in the field of Environmental Management (VIRA 2016) and Young Women in Science Award in 2019 (VIWA 2019).
Life is a journey where we constantly keep on chasing our dreams and overcoming the challenges faced in our day-to day life. I believe in learning from experiences of life.

She believes that, in today’s world, application-based learning is of utmost importance for the overall development of a student and to make them adapt to the changing pace of today’s generation. Along with her husband Capt. Saikat Chakraborty, Senior Lecturer, Aircraft Maintenance Engineering, Nilai University, Malaysia, she has initiated and launched their own YouTube channel Saikat Grothendick 55555 and website www.stemformasses.com in May 2019 for popularizing Science and Technology among the masses.
Having got cured of her asthma now with her strong will power and determination, she aspires to double her energies to contribute to the growth of the nation in all possible ways to fulfil the vision of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam in making India a developed country.
