Passionate to build strong foundation for school students

Education plays a vital role in building the future of our nation by transforming lives and communities. We have several educator heroes who help students aim high and achieve their potential, often meeting and overcoming considerable challenges along the way. Recently Delhi based MT Research & Educational Services (MTRES) came up with Teaching Excellence Awards (TEA) 2018, to recognize the monumental role teachers play in our society as they instil a desire to learn and achieve and create tomorrow’s leaders. Meet one of the awardees, Dr. Saurabh Manro, teacher at Government Middle School, Khattra, Tehsil Khanna, Ludhiana, Punjab, who has been honoured with Excellent Teacher Award in MTRES TEA 2018.

Dr Saurabh Manro belongs to a family of teachers. His father Mr. Satpal Manro is a retired ETT Teacher at A.S. Sr. Sec. School, Khanna, and his mother Ms. Brij Bala is a retired Headteacher at Govt. Primary School, Ajnali, Mandi Gobindgarh. He has completed M.Sc(Mathematics), M.Sc (Statistics), Phd (Mathematics), Post Doctorate (Mathematics), Post Graduate Diploma in Applied Statistics (PGDAST), B.Ed, M.Ed, UGC(NET)-CSIR, and has also qualified in GATE (All India Rank- 14, Year 2016). He started his professional journey as a Assistant Professor, Mathematics, in July 2004 at Regional Institute of Management and Technology, Mandi Gobindgarh, Punjab, where he taught to M.Sc(Maths), M.B.A. and M.C.A. students.

However, he soon realized that there is bigger need in building a stronger foundation for our students at school level itself and hence, at the start of year 2007, he left this job and joined Government Service as a Science Master at Govt. High School, Sirthala. There, he taught Math / Science from 6th to 12th class students. Later, in July 2012, he got transferred to Govt. Middle School Khattra (Near Khanna). Here, he teaches Math / Science from 6th to 8th class students.

He has introduced innovative pedagogies inspite of working with limited resources. He has made many innovative TLM’s in Maths like Magic Square Model, Magic Model of Mathematics, Mathematics Calender and Area Model that can be used to explain the concepts in much easier way. He has received accolades at Block and District level for his ingenuity. One of his TLM, Congruency and Similarity Model, was selected for state level participation in Inspire Award. He has often scored first rank at Block level and District level Science Fair among Teaching Aid Competitions.

He has been instrumental in making a Math-cum-Science Park at their School Ground for practical knowledge of students about both subjects. He has purchased various activity kits out of his own contribution (Math kit, Biodiversity kit, Astronomy kit, Transit of Venus kit, Earthquake kit, Chemistry kit) for his school lab. These kits proved very beneficial for enhancing the knowledge of students. Recently, his school’s Vipnet Club “Srinivasa Ramanujan Club” (VP-PB0029) has been upgraded to “Gold Category Club” for the Session 2018-19. What differentiates them is that theirs is the only club of a Government School in Punjab that falls under Gold category.

He opened “Teri Meri Dukan” (a stationery shop) in his School, where his school students can get notebooks, pencils, pens or any other stationery items free of cost. In order to increase the literacy among children, he actively encouraged parents, community, panchayat members, etc. to arrange for auto-rickshaw pick-up and drop service so that students from nearby villages can also attend school. The monthly auto-rickshaw fare is contributed by villagers as well as staff members.

From last two years, along with his colleagues Mr Dinesh Passi and Mr Parmjeet Singh, he gives free NTSE/NMMS, PSTSE coaching to all Govt. School students at Radha Krishan Mandir, Khanna. The success of their noble initiative can be gauged from the fact that about 40 students of their batches have qualified in various entrance examinations so far.

I owe my success to the support of my parents, brother Shakti Manro, bhabhi Sabnam Manro, sister Neetu Manro, jijaji Sandeep Chopra, my wife Rashmi Rani and my teachers. Their support and advice are my pillars of strength not only in work but at every stage of my life.

Demystifying thoughts to predict behavior

Much of what we don't understand about being human is simply in our heads. From those clusters of cells in our head arises the elusive, but powerful, mind. Despite our best attempts to "know ourselves," the truth is that we often know surprisingly little about our own minds, and even less about the way others think. Meet Psychologist Dr. Nitesh Kumar Jha, Clinical Research Officer at INCLEN (The International Clinical Epidemiology Network) Trust International, New Delhi, who has long sought insights into the complex mental processes that dictate human actions, and has made significant strides in lifting that veil of mystery.
