The School Kit Program of Seva Sahayog Foundation (SSF) is a total volunteers’ program which aims at providing underprivileged children from the urban slums and rural areas across India, new & quality education aid at the beginning of every year. Since it’s inception in the year 2008, they have provided more than 2.6 lakh school kits to children in an effort to encourage them to attend schools and reduce the dropout rates.
Phase 1 : Planning and Awareness Drives | Jan – Apr
The preparations at SSF begin from the start of the year itself. Seva-sahayogis (volunteers), NGOs, Corporate Donors and SSF staff start multiple meets to discuss school-kit program actions, responsibilities and role assignments and the project plan is finalized. In parallel, at SSF office, requests for school-kit from NGOs and schools are gathered and screened to finalize appropriate recipients of school-kits. Every year in the month of March, appeals of donation for school-kit are sent out. This year, 70 stalls were placed at corporate offices as well as housing societies to appeal and collect donations and also to attract volunteers.
Phase 2 : Procurement | Apr – May
A committee is formed to manage the procurement and rigorous vendor selection procedures are followed before orders are released to appropriate parties for requisite supply. A school-kit consists of a school bag containing notebooks, compass box, geometry box and other educational aids such as a pouch containing pencil, eraser, scale, sharpener and crayons. This year in memory of Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s 125th Birth Anniversary, a calendar was also published and included in every school-kit.
Phase 3 : Assembly of School Kits | May – Jun
Next is the assembly of assorted school material into a school-kit. This is a group activity where seva-sahyogis participate with friends, family and even their kids. A detailed schedule of school-kit assembly at various centres is prepared and shared with all seva-sahayogis. The session begins with unloading of the material, quality checking it, assembling them in the school bags, quality check of completed school-kits and re-loading of the final school-kits for distribution. This is a group activity and solely done through seva-sahayogis.
Phase 4 : Distribution | Jun – Jul
This is an activity of the program that gives utmost satisfaction. A schedule of distribution is prepared based on pre-screened list of recipients. It involves visiting the NGO, schools and ultimately distributing the school-kits to children. The big smile and the happy faces of children receiving new education aid at the beginning of the academic year is very heart warming for all supporters of school-kit program.
