Jadavpur University Physics Professor honoured with MTRES Teaching Excellence Award 2018

Education plays a vital role in building the future of our nation by transforming lives and communities. We have several educator heroes who help students aim high and achieve their potential, often meeting and overcoming considerable challenges along the way. Recently Delhi based MT Research & Educational Services (MTRES) came up with Teaching Excellence Awards (TEA) 2018, to recognize the monumental role teachers play in our society as they instil a desire to learn and achieve and create tomorrow’s leaders. Meet one of the awardees, Dr. Saikat Kumar Seth, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, who has been honoured with Excellent Teacher Award in MTRES TEA 2018.

Dr Seth has completed his graduation (B.Sc.) and post-graduation (M.Sc.) from Jadavpur University. During Ph.D work in Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Kolkata,  he had joined Mugberia Gangadhar Mahavidyalaya, Purba Medinipur, West Bengal, as an Assistant Professor of Physics. He served Mugberia Gangadhar Mahavidyalaya from 2007 to 2015 and then he joined in the department of Physics of Jadavpur University in 2016.

His research area is X-ray Crystallography and Crystal Engineering. Exploration of weak interactions and their cooperative effects in building extended supramolecular framework is the main goal of his research work. During Ph.D. work, his aim was to determine and elucidate the X-ray structure of small molecules. Then he was focused to work in the field of Crystal Engineering and to quantify weak noncovalent interactions. He did his post doctoral research at Universitat de les Illes Balears, Palma, Spain. Two research Scholars are currently pursuing their Ph.D. under his guidance.

Demystifying thoughts to predict behavior

Much of what we don't understand about being human is simply in our heads. From those clusters of cells in our head arises the elusive, but powerful, mind. Despite our best attempts to "know ourselves," the truth is that we often know surprisingly little about our own minds, and even less about the way others think. Meet Psychologist Dr. Nitesh Kumar Jha, Clinical Research Officer at INCLEN (The International Clinical Epidemiology Network) Trust International, New Delhi, who has long sought insights into the complex mental processes that dictate human actions, and has made significant strides in lifting that veil of mystery.
